Van owners reminded to empty overnight

‘No tools are left in this van overnight’ – it’s a notice we’re all used to seeing but figures recently released by a vehicle company suggest it still hasn’t twigged with some yet.

One insurance provider reported a notable surge in claims at the year with an increase of 13%, a majority of which were the result of night time break-ins.

It was also apparent that thieves targeted business vans parked on driveways or the roadside.

Chief Inspector Neil Baily with Norfolk Constabulary said: “We urge owners and drivers of vehicles never to leave valuable tools or other property within the vehicles overnight.

“A wide variety of tools have been stolen and entry to the vehicles has been made either by forcing door locks or smashing windows. It is likely that the thieves will attempt to sell the tools on.

“We are treating these incidents very seriously as we appreciate the impact that thefts of this type can have on peoples livelihoods, the stolen tools are often essential to the victims’ trades and they can suffer very serious financial consequences from this type of offence.”
