Hole in the road–UK’s worst roads named
The UK’s two most potholed roads have been revealed after a three month search.
Northumberland’s B6343 and Holme’s Fieldhead Lane in West Yorkshire were considered the worst public highways for potholes in an online vote instigated by Warranty Direct.
Members of the public nominated their most loathed road via Potholes.co.uk with a brief comment explaining their choice.
Fieldhead Lane was described as “more like an off-road assault course” [pictured above] while the B6343 was said to have “a huge array of potholes east of Mitford”.
The top five worst roads was completed by Long Mill Lane in Plaxtol, Kent, Basildon’s Yattendon Road in West Berkshire, and Fyfield Road in Amport, Hampshire.
“Third World roads”
Duncan McClure Fisher, MD of Warranty Direct, said judges were spoilt for choice: “To be honest, we could have awarded the honour to tens if not hundreds of stretches of road, but these two particularly stood out for those motorists having to use them daily.”
Almost 90 per cent of entries were local roads rather than motorways and it is hoped the extra £100m pledged by the Government in March’s Budget will go some way to remedying that.
“We handle thousands of axle and suspension claims every year involving damage clearly sustained a result of the long-term deterioration of our roads,” added Fisher.
“We welcomed the additional money in the Budget, but it needs to be a springboard in establishing a five or 10-year plan to revitalise our Third World local road network.”
