Scottish council cuts costs and CO2 with i-MiEV

As council cuts continue to cause upset throughout the land, one local authority’s reductions have sparked a contrasting reaction.

CO2 emissions will be slashed considerably by North Lanarkshire Council which is set to benefit from a wealth of cost-cutting potential as it introduces 12 new i-MiEVs to its pool car scheme.

The road-tax exempt and fully electric models are helping the council cut outgoings when it counts, costing just over £1 to charge overnight which is enough to see it cover around 93 miles. The i-MiEV is also 6% less to buy than their petrol equivalent.

Kenneth Wilson, Head of Land Services at North Lanarkshire Council, reckons the new i-MiEVs will generate savings of more than £150,000 in the next 18 months.

He said: “The Mitsubishi i-MiEVs will contribute greatly to the scheme as they cost significantly less to run than petrol or diesel vehicles, and are a far better option for air quality and the environment.

“Even the cost of buying the vehicles has been substantially funded by a grant of £215,000 from the Sustainability Carbon Trust.”

Pioneering

Councillor Helen McKenna, Convener of the Environmental Services committee, added: “As a council, we are committed to working sustainably.

“We have a carbon management plan, developed with help from the Carbon Trust, in place, and we’ve been signatory to Scotland’s Climate Change Declaration since 2007.

“The pioneering technology that has brought these cars will help us make even more difference to our environment, and will hopefully demonstrate to others that there are workable alternatives to petrol vehicles out there.”

Capable of hitting 60mph in under 13 seconds, the i-MiEV is considered a ideal for city driving with a top speed of 87mph.

“The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is revolutionary, innovative, fun, environmentally-friendly, agile, exciting and economical,” said Lance Bradley, MD of Mitsubishi Motors UK.

“With an electric vehicle like the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, customers need not compromise in any area.”
