Volvo meets carbon reduction targets

Staffan Jufors, President & CEO, Volvo TrucksVolvo Trucks has announced that their target to cut transport-related emissions from transport operations by 20% before 2011 was met with plenty to spare.

Carbon emissions were actually reduced by 22% measured as the average number of grams of carbon dioxide per ton per kilometre, a positive achievement by ’ Staffan Jufors’ standards.

The President and CEO of Volvo Trucks [pictured right] said: “This is a good example which shows how you can achieve sizeable benefits by working with environmental issues in a cohesive and organised way.

“We are proud to have achieved such a positive result by adopting a range of both large and small measures throughout the entire transport chain to and from our factories.”

The news was announced at the Logistics & Transport trade fair in Gothenburg last week.

Volvo say they met the target by producing more fuel efficient engines that produce less carbon dioxide and with more efficient use of cargo capacity and sea and train transport.

Although the challenge was set in 2008, Lars Mårtensson [left], Director Environmental Affairs at Volvo Trucks, said it was just the beginning of their work: “There is no one single solution when it comes to cutting carbon dioxide emissions in an effective way. Rather, it’s all about a range of measures.

“It is necessary to optimise every link the chain – every little bit counts. We’re really only at the start of our work in this area. When it comes to climate-impacting emissions, a lot remains to be done in the transport industry.”
