RoSPA award hat-trick for safety conscious Northgate
Northgate Vehicle Hire, has achieved its third consecutive Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents’ (RoSPA) Gold Award, which was presented to the company’s safety and environment manager Colin Gilstin (right) by Michael Hampson, RoSPA trustee, in a ceremony that took place alongside Safety & Health Expo 2011, Europe’s leading annual health and safety exhibition.
RoSPA launched its awards programme 55 years ago to recognise and promote important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement in accident records and health and safety management systems.
David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager, said: “RoSPA firmly believes that organisations that have demonstrated their commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention deserve recognition. Northgate Vehicle Hire has shown that it is committed to striving for such continuous improvement and we are delighted to honour it through the presentation of an award.”
After being presented with this year’s Gold Award, Mr Gilstin said: “The award is the culmination of yet another year’s tireless efforts to maintain the highest possible levels of safety across the whole Northgate Group. To win a Gold Award for the third consecutive year against extremely strict judging criteria is testimony to the successful implementation of a wide-range of health and safety initiatives to ensure the health and welfare of all of our 2,000 plus employees.”
Most recently, Northgate recently launched of a new campaign focusing around 10 key principles to staying safe and sound at work fronted by Ms Safe and Mr Sound.
Mr Gilstin said: “The two characters are being used to raise and promote health and safety awareness across all of our workplaces. By following these simple but effective 10 key principles, which take a sensible and practical approach to health and safety, employees can help improve standards and avoid accidents or incidents where they work.
“The focus of the campaign is to help influence safety behaviour and attitudes, both of which are paramount in meeting Northgate’s objective of providing a safe place of work.”
Other health and safety initiatives in the past 12 months have included issuing ‘winter driving packs’ to all of the company’s 450 plus collection and delivery drivers and ensuring employees attend a range of British Safety Council courses to equip them with the necessary safety skills and knowledge for their roles.
The RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2011 are sponsored by NEBOSH (The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health).
