Traffic plan to ease air show congestion at weekend (Sunday 12 June)
Visitors to the RAF Cosford Air Show in Shropshire on Sunday (12 June) are being advised by the Highways Agency to plan their journey and allow plenty of time to get to the event.
More than 50,000 people are expected to attend the air show, and the surrounding roads could be busy. Gates open at 8:30am with heaviest traffic anticipated between 8:30am and 1pm.
Drivers attending the air show are advised to use the M54 and follow the instructions on the variable message signs.
The Highways Agency is working with local police to manage extra traffic as it leaves the motorway at junction 3. Eastbound traffic will be diverted to use the alternative access to RAF Cosford. Once in the area drivers are being advised to follow the official diversion routes in preference to sat nav instructions.
Frank Bird, Event Planning Manager for the Highways Agency, said:
“We have worked closely with local police and the event organisers so that access to RAF Cosford is as easy as possible bearing in mind the large numbers of people attending. At the same time, this will help keep the M54 flowing for everyone else.”
Road users not attending the air show but heading westbound on the M54 are asked to use the outside lane of the motorway near junction 3 to pass any queuing traffic.
Extra Highways Agency Traffic Officers will be patrolling the motorway on the approach to RAF Cosford throughout the event to deal with any incidents that occur and clear them as quickly as possible.
A separate event at Shrewsbury Town FC on Sunday evening means the M54 and A49 could be busier than usual as some of the air show traffic heads home.
