Pessimism as pump prices dictate driver behaviour

The days of cruising the motorway at 80mph, regardless of the cost, are over prices are continuing to bully drivers off the road, according to a new survey on driving behaviour.

In a poll of 2,500 people, conducted by the IAM, half of them had adapted their behaviour behind the wheel to save fuel while over a third (38%) have cut down how much they use their car.

Over half of respondents also revealed that they abide to speed limits more often now to use less fuel and the IAM’s Neil Greig reckons this marks the end of an era.

“The days of cruising the motorway at 80mph, regardless of the cost, are over,” he commented.

“With rocketing fuel prices, it is clear that drivers are changing their behaviour, which is good for their health and the environment.”

Less than a fifth (18%) said they would consider buying a more fuel-efficient model, which isn’t as negative as it first appears.

“You don’t need a new car to become a greener driver,” adds Mr Greig. “You just need to change your driving style.

“For millions of motorists driving is a necessity, not a luxury. Rural drivers especially need their cars for work, socialising and family life. If drivers can reduce their car usage that’s great, but for those who can’t, driving as economically as possible is the answer.”

Oil price pessimism

Meanwhile, Steve Clarke of The Fuelcard People urged motorists and fleet managers not to get too excited by the recent drop in oil prices.

“Many filling stations are independent franchises which charge according to the advance price at which they ordered stocks,” said the Fuelcard People General Manager. “There are no grounds for optimism on oil prices.

“If crude oil prices fall, refining and delivery delay this reaching users, while various middle-men dilute the savings along the way.”

Steve added that crude prices tend to have climbed back to their previous level before the apparently cheaper oil reaches the pump.

“Even if they haven’t, filling station owners can’t afford to gamble on prices staying down because history shows that they don’t,” he concluded.
