Weekly summary of roadworks in Surrey, Hampshire, East Dorset, South Oxfordshire and South Berkshire: Monday 11 July – Sunday 17 July 2011
A34 Pen Barn Bridge (near Abingdon)
Essential maintenance work to repair the concrete underside and joints of the Pen Barn Bridge, near Abingdon in Oxfordshire, continues this week. The work is being carried out overnight between 10pm and 6am using temporary lane closures. There is a speed limit of 40 mph on the approach to the work site, and of 10mph past the work itself. The local road which runs over the bridge will also be closed whilst the joints are replaced. This scheme is scheduled to be completed by the middle of July.
A404(M) Western Region Railway Bridge
A scheme to replace the Western Region Railway Bridge on the A404(M) near Maidenhead continues this week. Two narrow lanes remain available at peak times in each direction, and a 40mph speed limit remains in place, with additional off-peak restrictions as required.
The scheme is expected to be completed in September 2011.
M4 Junction 13 – 14 Winterbourne Bridge (near Chieveley)
Safety repair work is taking place to the bridge which carries the M4 motorway over the B4494 between junctions 13 and 14 near Newbury in Berkshire. Work started at the beginning of May and is expected to take approximately 21 weeks to complete. Narrow lanes are currently in place on both carriageways, with additional overnight lane closures as required. At times overnight, traffic will be directed to use the hard shoulder. A 50mph temporary speed limit remains in place, enforced by average speed cameras.
M4 Junction 14 – 15 Woodlands St Mary
Vegetation Clearance Vegetation management work is currently taking place on the M4 between Woodlands St Mary and Junction 14 (Hungerford). Work started on Monday 4 July and should take around two weeks to complete. Strimmers will be used to cut back any excess vegetation on the road verge. The work is being carried out in advance of the second phase of a major maintenance scheme between Membury Service area and Woodlands St Mary, which stared last year. Work will be carried out using a hard shoulder closure between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
M3 Junctions 4 – 4a (near Farnborough)
Tree Management Essential tree management work will be carried out from Tuesday 12 July for three days. Five trees at the rear of Sunnybank Road and Mole Close in Farnborough will be cut back to ground level. The work will remove the risk of the trees overhanging a number of properties, also a number of power cables nearby. The work will be carried out during off-peak daytime hours and there will be no restrictions on the motorway.
Safety barrier maintenance
Various routes Work to inspect and re-tension safety barriers across motorways and major roads in central southern England continues this week. Depending on the location, work will be carried out during off-peak daytime hours or overnight using temporary lane closures, with occasional overnight slip road closures, which will be confirmed in this bulletin. This work should be completed in October 2011.
A3 Hindhead
Work continues on this major improvement scheme. There is a 50mph speed limit on the southern approach where the road tapers from two lanes into one and a 40mph speed limit at the northern approach.
Bedhampton Roundabout Improvement Work
A twelve month scheme led by Havant Borough Council to improve the junction at the Bedhampton Roundabout (also known as the Rusty Cutter Roundabout), just off junction 5 of the A3(M) in Hampshire, began in October 2010. The improvements will include the introduction of traffic signal controls at the end of the A3(M) and A27 exit slip roads at their junction with the roundabout. New lanes will also be added to the roundabout itself, on the A3(M) southbound exit slip road and eastbound on the link road to the A27 junction. M3 Junction 3-4 (near Camberley) Ground Investigation Work Ground investigation work will take place this week on the verge of the eastbound M3 between junctions 3 and 4. Work started on Tuesday 24 May and will require a number of overnight (10pm-5.30am) hard shoulder and single lane closures on the M3. It expected to be complete in nine weeks.
A303/A34 Bullington Cross
Slip road Closures Maintenance work continues on the A303 at the Bullington Cross in Hampshire, where the road meets the A34. Sections of the interchange will be resurfaced, and electrical work will be carried out on the street lights. Work to replace the cabling for the street lighting, is scheduled to take place overnight between 9pm and 5am on various dates in July and August and will be carried out in three separate phases, each requiring various slip road closures:
- The A303 eastbound exit and entry slip roads, and the A34 northbound exit and entry slip-roads will be closed for 10 consecutive nights (excluding Saturday and Sunday nights.);
- The A34 southbound exit slip-road will be closed for up to 15 consecutive nights (excluding Saturday and Sunday nights).
M27 Botley Road West Bridge
Joints on the M27 Botley Road West Bridge, which carries the B3035 over the M27, are being replaced. Work started Monday 4 July for eight nights (10pm-6am). The work will take place under lane closures, during off-peak hours. There will be no restrictions on the M27 motorway below.
M3 Maintenance Works, Hampshire and Surrey
Work to renew white lining and road studs along sections of the M3 in both directions from junction 13 at Eastleigh to just south of junction 2, at Thorpe will start this week. The work will be carried out overnight (10pm-6am) throughout July and August. Traffic Management will be in place on different sections of the M3 and will include lane closures with a restricted speed limit of 10mph past the work site.
There will be overnight closures of the M3 between junction 9 to junction 8 from the Friday 8 July to Saturday 16 July, with traffic will be diverted via the A34/A303. During all slip-road closures there will be clearly signed diversion routes in place.
