DSA launches 30k+ instructor database
Finding your nearest driving instructor has been made a lot easier thanks to a new free service implemented by the DSA.
Contact details for over 30,000 qualified and approved driving instructors have been made available by the Driving Standards Agency via the Directgov website.
Learner drivers can find their nearest instructor by simply entering their postcode and Road Safety Minister Mike Penning hopes it will enhance confidence from learners over their choice of tutor.
“This new service will make life easier for learner drivers and parents looking for qualified instructors in their area,” he commented.
“I hope that this will allow people to make more informed choices about who they want to teach them to drive.”
There are currently around 47,000 people on the Register of Approved Driving Instructors, and it is hoped that eventually all of them will be in the DSA’s directory.

Last legs
Something that certainly won’t be approved by the DSA is getting an 11-year old boy to help you change gear, something a one-legged driver from South Africa was discovered doing last week.
A 39 year old man from Cape Town was fined £90 and banned from driving after police discovered his 11-year old son operating the clutch pedal.
Rather than buying an automatic vehicle, the man – whose name has not been released – instructed the boy to press in the clutch whenever he needed to change gear.
The amputee didn’t have a leg to stand on when his bizarre driving habits were uncovered after a traffic inspector stopped him at a roadblock. When asked to produce his license, the driver pulled out an learner’s license for automatic vehicles that had expired last year. The vehicle was also confiscated after the handbrake was discovered broken.
“He won’t be allowed to drive, but he shouldn’t have been driving in the first place,” said a chief traffic inspector.
The driver lost his leg in 1996 after bone damage suffered from a gunshot rendered it beyond repair.
