Weekend is a car thief’s happy hour, say stats
Most of us enjoy some well-earned downtime during the weekend, however it’s the height of the working week for a car thief, according to stats from motor insurer Elephant.co.uk.
After compiling over 45,000 claims from the last five years, figures from Elephant suggest that you are more likely to have your car stolen on a Saturday than any other day in the week, while thieves tend to smash and grab items from vehicles on a Sunday.
But why the weekend? Brian Martin, MD of elephant.co.uk, attempted to explain.
“With most people out and about at the weekend, there’s a likelihood they’re leaving their cars unattended either in a car park or at home which could tempt thieves to make their move,” he said.
“Car thieves are opportunist, and too many motorists present them with an opportunity by leaving valuable items on show, or even leaving their windows open.”
‘Easy targets’
While it appears that the weekend is a car thief’s happy hour, the rest of the week bore little pattern.
After Saturday, most vehicles were stolen on Friday, followed by Thursday, Monday, Sunday, Wednesday and Tuesday, and besides Sunday, desirable items like sat-navs and laptops were more likely to vanish on a Tuesday, then Saturday, Monday, Thursday, Wednesday and Friday.
Mr Martin added that motorists need to avoid making themselves ‘easy targets’.
“The last thing you need after a hard week’s work is for your car to be stolen or broken into so this research will make unhappy reading for motorists,” he concluded.
