Importance of sat nav highlighted in national survey
Car rental firm Sixt has installed sat nav devices to over 1,000 of their vehicles in the past year after a survey highlighted motorists’ reliance on the modern navigation tools.
After surveying around 2,000 of their customers, Sixt found the sat nav to be the most vital element of a rental car, beating the arguably more critical spare tyre and fuel can.
Nearly 4 out of 5 respondents held this view while 15% said they wouldn’t feel comfortable driving without it.
This dependency on technology and rejection of traditional maps was highlighted by the fact that the large majority comforted by a sat nav’s presence were younger drivers. Over a quarter (27%) said they had never used a map while 13% confessed they didn’t even know how to use one.
The spare tyre was viewed as the most important piece of kit by 60% of respondents, although 72% admitted they wouldn’t even bother to check if their hire car had one before heading off.
Paul McLoughlin, Managing Director of Sixt UK, said the demand for sat navs is ‘astounding’.
“It’s clear that with more Brits taking Staycations, reliance on navigation technologies in rental cars is at an all-time high,” he commented.
“In the last 12 months alone, we’ve installed over 1,000 systems to our fleet in the UK – a 300% increase over last year.
“At this point, even if we wanted to charge double for a day’s rental of sat-nav, I think the demand would still be there!”
