Eco-driving event eyes up new record

An annual event aimed at optimising fuel-friendly driving behaviour will aim to break the 100 barrier for the first time this October.

The highlights how businesses and everyday motorists can enjoy cheaper running costs by adopting easy-to-master driving traits.

Starting and winding up at the Four Pillars Hotel in South Cerney near Cirencester, the 380-mile circuit has got event organiser Ross Durkin quite excited after the launch of a new website and a focus on social media in an effort to involve more younger drivers.

“My own sons are constantly reminding me how much it costs to put petrol in their cars and they and their friends are increasingly looking for ways to get more miles from every thankful,” said Ross.

“With energy costs rising across the board, it’s not surprising that motorists are increasingly looking for ways to get more miles out of every pound spent on fuel.

“The motor manufacturers have done a fantastic job of improving the fuel efficiency of their cars, but let’s not overlook the fact that the use of certain smarter driving techniques can significantly reduce the amount of fuel used on a journey.

“Savings of up to 20% are by no means difficult to achieve.”

Mr Durkin added that this year’s MPG Marathon has attracted record entries but there is still time for drivers who would like to get involved.

MPG Marathon is set to take place on 5-6 October and is organised by Fleet World magazine with the help of Energy Saving Trust, ALD Automotive, TomTom Business Solutions and the Automobile Association.
