Road works information for Highways Agency roads across the North West: 7 days beginning Monday 15 August 2011
ONGOING SCHEMES
M56 (Greater Manchester)
A series of closures will be taking place on the M56 around Greater Manchester throughout August while work takes place to resurface sliproads and sections of the carriageway between junction 1 at Kingsway where it meets the M60 and junction 6 at Hale.
Different entry and exit slip road will be closed overnight on different dates and signed diversions will be in place. Closures include:
- the roads linking the M56 and M60 around M56 Junction 1
- the entry slip road from the southbound A34 Kingsway and the exit slip road from the M56 onto the northbound A34 Kingsway
- the eastbound entry and westbound exit slip roads at Junction 2 at Sharston
- the eastbound exit slip road at Junction 3a
- the eastbound entry slip roads at Junction 5 at Manchester Airport and Junction 6 at Hale
- the westbound entry and exit slip roads at Junction 6.
Several miles of eastbound carriageway between Hasty Lane south of Manchester Airport and the bridge over the railway line at Blackcarr just north of Junction 3a will also be closed for resurfacing but drivers will be able to use the hard shoulder instead with a 50mph speed limit in place.
Parts of the westbound carriageway between Hollyedge Road overbridge west of Junction 3 and the Chapel Lane overbridge west of Junction 6 will also be resurfaced and subject to overnight closures – but again with the hard shoulder used as a running lane and a 50mph speed limit in place to keep the motorway open to drivers.
Work will be taking place between 10pm and 5am and will only affect individual slip roads or sections of the carriageway for one or two nights before work moves onto another part of the motorway and the project is completed before Thursday, September 1.
M56 Junction 36a (Cheshire)
The A55 Northbound exit sliproad at junction 36a on The M56 will be fully closed for five days while work to restructure the Whitchurch Road roundabout takes place. A diversion route will take motorists North to the A51 junction and left into Chester.
M60 Junctions 19-23 (Middleton to Ashton)
There will be various lane closures on the clockwise and anti clockwise carriageways of the M60 between junction 23 (Ashton under Lyne) and junction 19 (Middleton) while work to repair the road surface continues. A 40 mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the works, with average speed cameras in operation.
M53 (Bidston Moss)
Junction 1 Wallasey (bridge repairs) – various lane closures in both directions at Bidston Moss Viaduct for bridge repairs. Work continues until the end of March 2012.
During the current phase of works, which will start on 12 August and is expected to last seven weeks, there will be a full closure of the Southbound exit slip from the A5139 Docks Link Road to the M53 junction 1 roundabout and overnight closures of the Docks Links Road from the Poulton Bridge Road roundabout to the A5139 Southbound exit slip.
A diversion will take drivers via Gorsey Lane, Dock Road, A5088 Wallasey Bridge Road, the A553 Hoylake Road and the A554 to the M53 junction 1.
M53 (Cheshire Oaks)
There will be off peak lane closures at junction ten while work to improve the entranceway into Cheshire Oaks takes place. Work is expected to continue until the Summer. In the event of queues, motorists trying to access Cheshire Oaks are advised to exit the M56 at junction 14 and use the A5117.
A55, J36a (Saighton Army Camp – near Huntington in Cheshire) Improvement works to the roundabout ahead of a new housing development mean that various lanes will be closed during off peak periods between now and October. Once completed, the works will provide an additional lane on the exit sliproad.
Dunnings Bridge Road (Bootle)
There will be various road closures in parts of Bootle, including Park Lane West, Dunnings Bridge Road, Copy Lane and Netherton Way while work to renew 2km of gas mains takes place between now and November.
National Grid has worked with the Highways Agency to reduce their impact on motorists. On Dunnings Bridge Road, two lanes in each direction will remain open during the day with further lane restrictions only being put in place at night and during weekends. Work will also be suspended during major events such as football matches.
Cumbria and North Lancashire
NEW SCHEMES
A590 (Ulverston)
Four nights of repairs will start on Monday (15) along 800 yards of the single carriageway section and eastbound dual carriageway section of the A590 around the Litheburn Road junction at Ulverston.
The work, which will take place between 8pm and 6am each night, is part of a wider scheme to repair pothole son the A590.
Combinations of traffic management will be deployed, but may involve 10pmh convoy working at times overnight to take traffic past the roadworks. At other times, 50mph speed limits will be in place.
ONGOING SCHEMES
A66 Kemplay Bank roundabout – South of Penrith town centre Improvement works as part of a new Sainsbury’s development mean that a 40mph speed limit will be imposed from Tuesday 31 May for the duration of the scheme, which is scheduled to finish at the end of November. Two lanes will be maintained on the A66 during the daytime but the roundabout will be reduced to one lane overnight between 8pm and 6am. Three adjacent lay-bys on the A66 will also be closed.
