Proportion of maintenance slackers still a concern

The police will stop and fine cars with broken brake lightsIgnorance is bliss for a section for motorists who seriously slack when it comes to checking the most basic parts of their vehicle.

According to a survey of 3,000 motorists, 20% never check their brake fluid while one in six can’t be bothered to see if their brake lights are working.

As ever, tyres were a concerning area of neglect with one in nine never bothering to check their tread; 85% of them wouldn’t know what they’re looking for anyway.

Craig Mailey, Marketing Director of Manheim Auctions – who conducted the study, stressed that failing to maintain these areas was not only dangerous but also illegal.

“The police will, quite rightly, stop and fine cars with illegal tyre tread or broken brake lights,” he said.

“Not only will this be costly but the points on your licence will impact on your car insurance.”

Insufficient

Motorists can expect to receive three points for each tyre with insufficient tread and a maximum fine of £2,500.

A faulty brake light can also result in three penalty points and a £60 fine.

“We’d recommend performing basic checks on your vehicle regularly, and especially before long journeys,” added Craig.

“If you know what you are doing, it takes minutes to check tyre pressure and tread, and if your lights are working properly.

“If you don’t know, get yourself down to any reputable service centre and ask them to show you. It could prove to be a very valuable 15 minute lesson. Remember it’s not just your life you are risking but that of your family and other road users.”
