Congestion expected to rise as the dreaded school run returns

imageThe start of September officially signals the end of summer for many and for those searching for another reason to feel glum this morning, this week sees the return of the school run and one of the most hectic times for British roads.

Two words that strike fear into the heart of almost every road user, the school run has been blamed for more than tripling the number of traffic incidents from 384 on an average Monday morning in August to 1330.

The figures gathered by also show that the volume of queuing traffic at morning rush hour is multiplied over four times. Last year’s ‘back-to-school’ Monday recorded 1460 miles of traffic at its peak while across the UK was at its most severe at 8.41am.

A spokesperson for TomTom said: “Using historical traffic information gathered by TomTom HD Traffic, it’s clear there will be many more drivers on the road during Monday morning’s rush hour increasing traffic jams and incidents.”

History tells us that hometime won’t be much easier with 919 miles of traffic, peaking at 5.44pm last year.

Tomorrow morning could be an even bigger slog with the corresponding date in 2010 producing 1785 miles of queuing traffic, three times what the average Tuesday morning in August sees.
