Brummies most likely to go without insurance
Birmingham has been revealed as the British capital of uninsured drivers.
In a list of the top 20 postcodes for uninsured motorists, half were Brum-based including the top three for the the second year running.
West Yorkshire was also recognised as a hotspot for insurance dodgers with five Bradford postcodes and one from Halifax appearing in the top 20 list.
Manchester featured twice with Romford’s RM20 in Essex was the only postcode south of Birmingham to make it into the rankings.
The table was published by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) who claim that the level of uninsured drivers in these postcodes was up to eight times the national average.
Ashton West, Chief Executive at MIB, said these motorists were running the risk of receiving fines, wheel clamping, and having the vehicle seized altogether.
“We cannot stand by and let uninsured driving continue, otherwise the honest motorist will keep paying the bills for the injury and damage caused to people and property,” commented West.
“We are determined to bring UK levels more in line with the rest of Western Europe and that is why the industry are committed to playing their part by making sure that motor policies are recorded on the MID, thus enabling the police and DVLA to identify vehicles that have no insurance.”
Good progress
With the introduction of the Continuous Insurance Enforcement Law earlier this year, Phil Gormley, Road Policing Lead Chief Constable for the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), believes fewer drivers are getting behind the wheel without insurance.
“Overall there is good progress being made to reduce the number of vehicles being driven without insurance and today there are 500,000 fewer of these on the roads than five years ago,” he said.
“There are areas of the UK however that continue to present a challenge for enforcement authorities.
“The advantage that the MID information provides is that we know where these vehicles are, and can focus our attention on areas where we have the greatest impact.”
