Get your winter tyres before the big chill

Fleet managers are being advised to get their winter fitted before the rush.

The UK is set for yet another bitterly frosty close to the year after two harsh winters claimed many motorists’ mobility, however the different tread pattern of winter tyres could help keep your fleet on the move.

Peter Rodger, the IAM’s Chief Examiner, said: “The weather we experience in the UK is nowhere near as severe as many other countries, but with the past two winters having been particularly bad, motorists in the hardest-hit areas may feel reassured to have the extra grip winter tyres afford.

Although a full set typically cost between £400 and £500, Mr Rodger said it is definitely worth considering.

“Most drivers won’t detect any significant difference in grip until the temperature is freezing,” he added. “But most importantly, if conditions are really treacherous you should just consider postponing the journey and staying at home.

“Even if the mercury drops to below zero, safe and sensible driving will mean you shouldn’t have any cause for emergency stops, and so little need to test your tyres to their limits.”

Stuart Jackson, Chairman of tyre safety organisation , backed up Peter’s sentiments.

“Tyres are crucial to a vehicle’s performance yet many drivers do not make adequate or regular safety checks on their tyres,” he commented.

“Without proper tread depth, tyres cannot cope with wet roads leading to loss of grip, longer stopping distances and an increased safety risk.”
