Overnight maintenance on the A14 between Girton Interchange and Spittals Interchange in Cambridgeshire

Overnight maintenance work will start on Thursday (22 September) on a 10-mile section of the in Cambridgeshire. The work will be carried out in both directions between the /M11 Girton Interchange (Junction 31) and the /A141 Spittals Interchange near Huntingdon (Junction 23).

It will take place overnight, on week nights only, and will involve carriageway closures with clearly signed diversions. It is due to be completed by Monday 3 October, weather permitting.
Keith Hutchinson, Highways Agency project sponsor, said: “This work will maintain the road surface and minimise the need for emergency roadworks.
“The work has been carefully planned to keep disruption to a minimum and that is why it is taking place overnight when traffic flows are lowest.
“We ask that drivers allow extra time and take extra care when travelling along the diversion routes.”

While the work is carried out there will be overnight closures of either the westbound or eastbound carriageway. The work will be carried out between 9pm and 6am Monday to Thursday nights, and between 10pm and 6am on Friday nights with no work taking place on Saturday and Sunday nights. It will be carried out in two phases to minimise disruption.

There will be clearly signed diversion routes in place for each closure as follows:

Phase 1, Thursday 22 – Friday 23 September, westbound carriageway between Girton (junction 31) and Spittals (junction 23), as well as the A1307 Huntingdon Road out of Cambridge. Westbound traffic will be diverted onto the A428 at Girton Interchange to join the A1 northbound at St Neots and rejoin the A14 westbound at Brampton Hut. Local residents and residents of Bar Hill and Lolworth will be signed off the A428 at Hardwick and up to the Dry Drayton junction. Traffic will be able to access the A14 westbound to junction 29 (Bar Hill), residents living in Lolworth or properties to the west of Bar Hill will be escorted through the closure from the westbound on-slip at Bar Hill. Residents living between Girton Interchange and Dry Drayton will be escorted through the work from a hold point on Huntingdon Road.

Phase 2, Wednesday 28 – Monday 3 October, eastbound carriageway closure between the A14/A141 Spittals interchange (junction 23) and the A14/M11 Girton Interchange (junction 31) Eastbound traffic will be diverted onto the A1 southbound at Brampton Hut, to join the A428 eastbound at St Neots and back onto the A14 at Girton Interchange. On Monday 3 October the A14 eastbound will be open from junction 24 (Godmanchester). Local residents with access directly off the A14 will be escorted through the works from Spittals Interchange.

A further scheme to maintain the embankment and replace the safety barrier on the eastbound carriageway of the A14 at Godmanchester (junction 24) is set to start on Wednesday 28 September for approximately one month. There will be 24 hour narrow lanes in place as well as 50mph speed restriction. From Tuesday 4 October, there will be overnight closures of the eastbound carriageway between the slip roads at junction 24. Traffic will be diverted down and under the junction.
