Weekly summary of roadworks in Surrey, Hampshire, East Dorset, South Oxfordshire and South Berkshire 16/09/2011

A31 Canford Bottom Junction Improvements
Advance work starts on Monday 19 September on a road upgrade at the Canford Bottom Junction on the A31. The scheme will reduce congestion, both on the A31 and the other local roads on approach to the roundabout.

The scheme will involve converting the existing roundabout into a fully signalised junction, with the A31 extending through the centre of the roundabout.

The first phase of work will be will involve surveys and other enabling activities. Main construction is scheduled to begin in October. The project is expected to take around 34 weeks to complete.

To ensure any disruption is kept to an absolute minimum, most work will be carried out overnight when traffic flows are lowest, although some work will be carried out during the day as well.

A303/A3057 Winchester Road Slip-road
Resurfacing (near Andover) Sections of the eastbound exit slip road of the A303 at the A3057 Winchester Road junction near Andover will be resurfaced this week. The work will be carried out overnight on Tuesday 20 September 2011 between 10pm and 6am, during which time the slip road will be closed. Two clearly signed diversion routes will be in place during the closure, and will divert traffic either via the A3093 Picket Twenty Junction or the A343 Salisbury Road Junction. Temporary traffic lights will also be in use along a section of Winchester Road.

A34 Road Marking Renewal Scheme
Work continues this week to renew the white lining and road studs across all lanes of the A34 between Winchester and the M40 Junction 9 Interchange. Starting on Monday 19 September for six week nights (between 10pm and 6am), the A34 will be closed in both directions between Kings Worthy and the A303/A34 Bullington Cross Junction. There will also be full closures of the northbound and southbound slip roads at the A34/A272 Three Maids Hill Junction. During these closures, there will be clearly signed diversion routes in place.

A404(M) Western Region Railway Bridge
A scheme to replace the Western Region Railway Bridge on the A404(M) near Maidenhead continues this week. Two narrow lanes remain available at peak times in each direction, and a 40mph speed limit remains in place, with additional off-peak restrictions as required.

From midday on Friday 23 September, there will be a full closure of the A404(M) in both directions between junction 9b and the M4 Junction 8/9 roundabout while equipment is removed from site. Some resurfacing work will also be carried out. The road will reopen at 5am on Monday 26 September.

Safety barrier maintenance – various routes Work to inspect and re-tension safety barriers across motorways and major roads in central southern England continues this week. Depending on the location, work will be carried out during off-peak daytime hours or overnight using temporary lane closures, with occasional overnight slip road closures, which will be confirmed in this bulletin. This work is expected to be complete in October 2011.

A3 Hindhead
This major improvement scheme is now open to traffic. Work to remove the traffic signals on the old A3 and replace them with a mini double roundabout continues this week, with temporary traffic signals on the old A3. Main work is expected to be complete in October, with footpath improvement work continuing in November. The project team would like to thank the local community for their continued cooperation and understanding whilst these final stages of work are carried out.

Bedhampton Roundabout improvement work
A 12-month scheme led by Havant Borough Council to improve the junction at the Bedhampton Roundabout (also known as the Rusty Cutter Roundabout), just off junction 5 of the A3(M) in , began in October 2010. The improvements will include the introduction of traffic signal controls at the end of the A3(M) and A27 exit slip roads at their junction with the roundabout. New lanes will also be added to the roundabout itself, on the A3(M) southbound exit slip road and eastbound on the link road to the A27 junction.

M275 embankment work
Work to strengthen the existing sea defences along the M275 between Hilsea and Portsmouth will continue this week and is due to be completed by the end of October. Work will be carried out overnight between 10.30pm and 6am, Monday to Friday (and will be subject in part to the tide).

The work will comprise of repairs to the embankment earthworks including remedial works to eroded areas, as well as replacement of damaged kerbing, where necessary. The work will ensure a regenerated long term sea defence which will provide essential protection not only to the adjacent major road network (M275/ M27/ A27) but also to the communities of Hilsea and Portsmouth.

A3 maintenance work, Hampshire and
Work to renew white lining and road studs along sections of the A3 in both directions throughout Surrey and Hampshire will take place between 30 August and 21 September. Work will be carried out at night between 10pm and 6am. Traffic Management will be in place on different sections of the A3 and will include mobile lane closures with a restricted speed limit of 10mph through the works area.

M3 Junction 3 Resurfacing
Sections of the southbound M3 just past junction 3 at Bagshot in Surrey will be resurfaced this week. Work starts on Monday 19 September for three nights, and will be carried out using temporary lane closures.

M3 Junction 6 Resurfacing
Sections of the southbound M3 spur road at junction 6 of the M3, near Basingstoke in Hampshire, will be resurfaced overnight on Wednesday 21 September. The work will be carried out between 10pm and 6am each night, during which time the link road will be closed. Drivers will be directed to follow a fully signed diversion route on the A30 and the A287 to join the M3 at junction 5.

M3 Junction 4a – 5 Resurfacing
Sections of the northbound M3, between junction 4a and junction 5 in Hampshire will be resurfaced this week.

Work will start on Thursday 22 September for four nights, between 10pm and 5am each night, and will be carried out using temporary lane closures and a 50 mph speed limit .The northbound entry slip road at junction 5 will be closed during this time, with a fully signed diversion route in place.
