Once this has taken place Bedfordshire Police will start a rolling road block which will slow traffic down and bring it to a stop for approximately 20 minutes while the gantry is lifted and bolted into place. There will be a further overnight lane closure on the northbound carriageway between the Black Cat Roundabout (A1/A428) and Sandy on Tuesday 4 October between 8pm and 6am. The closure will be in place to enable shrub and tree clearance and investigation of existing drainage system.

ONGOING WORK

M1 J10 TO J13 BEDFORDSHIRE HARD SHOULDER RUNNING SCHEME
The following work is being carried out as part of the M1 J10 to J13 Managed Motorway scheme to provide additional capacity by opening up the hard shoulder as a running lane. There will be overnight sliproad closures at Junctions 11 and 13 as follows:

  • Junction 11, Southbound exit sliproad: Monday 3, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 5, and Thursday 6, Friday 7 October.
  • Junction 11, Southbound entry sliproad: Tuesday 4, Wednesday 5, Thursday 6 October.
  • Junction 13, Southbound entry sliproad: Monday 3, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 5 October.
  • Junction 10, Northbound up and over: Saturday 8 October.

A contraflow is in operation on the M1 between junctions 12 and 13. During peak hours three lanes will remain open in both directions. A contraflow remains in operation from north of Junction 11 to Junction 10, diverting a lane of southbound traffic onto the northbound carriageway. Traffic on the northbound carriageway is using the hard shoulder as an additional lane. This allows for three lanes of traffic in each direction during the day whilst work takes place. This will continue until July 2011. There are currently hard shoulder closures between Junctions 11 and 12, with a speed restriction of 50 mph. In addition, the same speed restriction is in force to junctions 10 and 13. The enforced 50mph speed limit is there for the safety of the travelling public and the workforce on site. This traffic management is in place for the work on the Hard Shoulder Running scheme to reduce congestion and improve safety on the 15 mile stretch of the M1 in Bedfordshire. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys whilst the road works are taking place.

M1 MAINTENANCE WORK NEAR MILTON KEYNES

There will be a temporary speed limit on the A12 in both directions throughout the work.

A lane closure with two-way traffic signals will be in place on Birchwood Bridge over the A12 for part of the work period. Local signed diversions will be in place for traffic wishing to join the A12 from three adjoining roads within the work area.

It is due to be completed by Monday 3 October, weather permitting. Phase 2 of the works started on Wednesday 28 September on the eastbound carriageway between the Spittals and Girton Interchanges. Eastbound traffic will be diverted onto the A1 southbound at Brampton Hut to join the A428 eastbound at St Neots and rejoin the A14 eastbound at Girton Interchange. All other traffic should follow locally signed diversions.

A14 SUFFOLK SPEED RESTRICTION AT TRIMLEY INTERCHANGE
A 50mph speed restriction has been introduced on the eastbound and westbound carriageways of the A14 at Trimley Interchange (junction 59) while investigations are carried out on both nearside verges and central reservation.

A14 SUFFOLK – A14 CORRIDOR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SCHEME
Work to install the final stage of the £70m jam-busting technology project for the A14 began in Needham Market in September 2010. The project will see an electronic messaging system operating from the M1 at Catthorpe in Leicestershire through to the Port of Felixstowe. The majority of the signs are now working and queue protection has been switched on at a number of junctions. As the scheme is now functioning messages set on the signs will reflect current traffic conditions and should be observed.

The technology will benefit road users by providing them with advanced warnings of queuing or stationery traffic ahead. The signs will also provide information about expected journey times and information on diversions when they are necessary. The use of CCTV cameras will provide information to help improve traffic flow and monitor major incidents including improving response times to incidents by the emergency services.

A14/A12 COPDOCK INTERCHANGE & A14/A154 DOCK SPUR ROUNDABOUT IMPROVEMENTS
A scheme to improve the A14/A12 Copdock Interchange near Ipswich and the A14/A154 Dock Spur Roundabout at Felixstowe started on Monday 23 May. The work will be carried out 24 hours a day and will continue for seven months. During the work a temporary 40mph speed limit will be in force at both junctions, with a 50mph speed limit on the junction approaches. At the southern exit from the Dock Spur roundabout the offside lane of the A14 will be closed. There will be lane closures in place most nights and on a limited number of nights there will be carriageway closures or convoy working, with dates to be published once confirmed. The scheme has been designed to accommodate additional traffic generated by the Port of Felixstowe expansion and is being funded by the Felixstowe Dock and Railway Company.

A120 ESSEX, MARKS FARM ROUNDABOUT IMPROVEMENT WORK
Work started on Monday 1 August for 45 weekday nights (8pm to 6am only), weather permitting, to improve traffic flows around Marks Farm roundabout on the A120 near Braintree. The work is being carried out as a condition of planning permission for a supermarket expansion nearby. The dual section of the A120 eastbound approaching the roundabout will be reduced to one lane for the duration of the works and four way temporary traffic lights will be in place to control traffic around the roundabout as required during the overnight works. Overnight work using traffic signals is now in place at the roundabout, 8pm – 5am, until Saturday 8 October. The work is expected to be complete by mid-October.
