SMMT pledges support for winter tyres

The SMMT has added its voice to the debate, encouraging motorists to seriously consider fitting the performance and safety enhancing tyres in preparation for the nippy months ahead.

According to the British Tyre Manufacturers’ Association, winter tyres can make all the difference in the event of an emergency stop, cutting the braking distance of a car travelling at 62mph by around five metres.

Winter tyres possess specially formulated compounds that harden less as temperatures fall, resulting in a more responsive drive in frostier atmospheres.

Paul Everitt, Chief Executive, said a set of winter tyres should be thought of as an investment rather than a cost.

He commented: “Tyres can have a major effect on a car’s performance, improving its safety and keeping it moving in winter conditions.

“Winter tyres provide greater grip and handling, reducing braking distances in cold, wet conditions as well as on snow and ice.

“With temperatures starting to drop and the wetter seasons approaching, motorists should make sure they have the best tyres for the road and climate conditions.”
