A traffic management summary for both new and ongoing work
The information provided in this report is correct as of the above date but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
A31 Canford Bottom Junction
Improvements Main construction work starts this week on a road upgrade at the Canford Bottom Junction on the A31. The scheme will reduce congestion, both on the A31 and the local roads on approach to the roundabout. The improvements will involve upgrading the existing roundabout into a fully signalised junction, with the A31 extending through the centre of the roundabout.
Work this week includes vegetation clearance and removal of the existing lane markings and road studs to install the traffic management. Work will be carried out between Monday and Friday and is expected to take around 34 weeks to complete. To ensure any disruption is kept to an absolute minimum, most work will be carried out overnight, although some work will be carried out during the day as well.
A303 Upper Cranbourne Resurfacing
Work to repair sections of the road surface on the westbound A303 at Upper Cranbourne, near Bullington in Hamsphire, will be carried out this week. Work starts on Wednesday 12 October for three nights, between 10pm and 6am each night, and will be carried out using a lane closure. There will be a temporary speed limit of 40 mph on the approach to the lane closure and a speed limit of 10mph past the work site.
While work is being carried out, there will be restricted access from the westbound carriageway of the A303 onto the road leading to Upper Cranbourne Farm. Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place.
A34 Beacons Hill Interchange Slip-road Closure – Lane Markings
The northbound exit slip road at the Beacons Hill Interchange will be closed overnight (10pm and 6am) on Thursday 13 October while road markings and road studs are installed following recent resurfacing work. During the closure a clearly signed diversion route via the Tot Hill Roundabout will be in place.
A404 Road Marking Renewal
Work continues this week to renew the lane markings and road studs across all lanes of main A404 carriageway in both directions. Work is being carried out overnight between 9pm and 6am, using mobile lane closures, with a 40mph speed restriction on approach to the work site, and a 10mph speed restriction past it. The work is expected to be complete by Friday 14 October.
A404 Footbridge Inspection
Inspection work will be carried out this week on the Volvo Footbridge, near Marlow in Buckinghamshire. The work will be carried out during the day on Monday 10 October and overnight on Wednesday 12 October. On Monday 10 October there will be temporary traffic lights on the Parkway road which runs parallel with the A404; then on Wednesday 12 October there will be overnight lane closures on the northbound and southbound carriageways of the A404. Access to the footbridge will be maintained at all times.
M4 Junction 10 – 11 Resurfacing
Sections of the westbound M4 between junctions 10 and 11 at Shinfield near Reading will be resurfaced this week. Work starts on Monday, and will take three nights to complete, between 10pm and 5am each night using temporary lane restrictions.
M4 Junction 5 to 12 Street Lighting
Electrical work continues this week in the central reservation of the M4 between junction 5 for Datchet and junction 12, near Reading. Work will be carried out overnight between 9pm and 6am, using a temporary lane closure, and is expected to be completed by the end of October.
M4 Junction 14 (Hungerford) Bridge
Joint Replacement Scheme Safety improvement work to replace the bridge joints at junction 14 of the M4 at Hungerford continues this week. Bridge joints allow for the movement of the bridge deck in response to changes in traffic flows and temperature. The joints are reaching the end of their serviceable life and need to be replaced. The work started on 28 September and are expected to take approximately eight weeks to complete, carried out at night between 10pm and 6am using narrow lane running on both sides of the road and a temporary restricted speed limit of 50mph.
M4 Junction 10 (near Winnersh) Bridge Joint Replacement Work to replace bridge joints on the Winnersh Interchange link road bridge, where the M4 link road passes beneath the A329(M) near Wokingham continues this week. The joints allow for the movement of the bridge deck in response to changes in traffic flows and temperature.
Work will be carried at night between 8pm and 5.30am when traffic flows are lowest, and is being coordinated with resurfacing work being carried out on the A329(M) by Wokingham Borough Council, using temporary lane restrictions on either carriageway, with a reduced speed limit of 50mph. Occasional overnight carriageway closures will also be required, with a clearly signed diversion route in place via junction 11 of the M4 at Reading. Work is expected to be complete in November.
Safety barrier maintenance – various routes
Work to inspect and re-tension safety barriers across motorways and major roads in central southern England continues this week. Depending on the location, work will be carried out during off-peak daytime hours or overnight using temporary lane closures, with occasional overnight slip road closures, which will be confirmed in this bulletin. This work is expected to be complete in October 2011.
A3 Hindhead
This major improvement scheme is now open to traffic.
Work to remove the traffic signals on the old A3 and replace them with a mini double roundabout continues this week, with temporary traffic signals on the old A3. Main work is expected to be complete in October, with footpath improvement work continuing in November. The project team would like to thank the local community for their continued cooperation and understanding whilst these final stages of work are carried out.
Bedhampton Roundabout improvement work
A 12-month scheme led by Havant Borough Council to improve the junction at the Bedhampton Roundabout (also known as the Rusty Cutter Roundabout), just off junction 5 of the A3(M) in Hampshire, began in October 2010. The improvements will include the introduction of traffic signal controls at the end of the A3(M) and A27 exit slip roads at their junction with the roundabout. New lanes will also be added to the roundabout itself, on the A3(M) southbound exit slip road and eastbound on the link road to the A27 junction.

M275 embankment work
Work to strengthen the existing sea defences along the M275 between Hilsea and Portsmouth will continue this week and is due to be completed by the end of October. Work will be carried out overnight between 10.30pm and 6am, Monday to Friday (and will be subject in part to the tide).
The work will comprise of repairs to the embankment earthworks including remedial works to eroded areas, as well as replacement of damaged kerbing, where necessary. The work will ensure a regenerated long term sea defence which will provide essential protection not only to the adjacent major road network (M275/ M27/ A27) but also to the communities of Hilsea and Portsmouth.
M271 Lordshill Interchange
Resurfacing work on the M271 at the Lordshill Interchange in Southampton will start on Monday 10 October and is expected to be completed on Thursday 20 October. Work will be carried out between 10pm and 5.30am each night, using temporary carriageways closures on the M271 in either direction between the Lordshill Interchange and the A3057.A fully signed diversion route will be in place directing road users via the A3057.
A31 Lake Gates to Merley
Sections of the A31 carriageway between Lake Gates and Merley, near Poole in Dorset, will be resurfaced this week. Work will start on Monday 10 October for three nights, from 10pm to 6am each night. A reduced speed limit will be in place and road users will be escorted past the work site by a convoy vehicle.
