Growing support for dog harness laws

Dog in a seatbelt. What could be more natural?More than 6 in 10 motorists are behind the idea of making it illegal for dogs to travel in cars whilst unrestrained.

Results from the survey carried out by Motoring Assist depict the level of support for the introduction of legislation to make it compulsory for dogs to wear seatbelts or harnesses in cars.

David Williams MBE, CEO of the breakdown cover specialists, outlined the dangers of pets that don’t belt up: “If a motorist is travelling at just 30 miles per hour, in the case of impact, an unrestrained average sized dog weighing approximately 50lbs would be projected forward with a force equal to a baby elephant.

“Not only are unnecessary accidents caused by unrestrained animals in the car but the consequences in a crash can be much more severe.”

Actor Todd Carty, famed for his roles in Eastenders and The Bill, became the figurehead of a campaign calling for the new law after an alarming incident where his seven year old chocolate labrador Sophie was almost hurtled through his car window during an emergency stop.

“I’ll never transport Sophie again without her being properly secured. My advice is: don’t risk it,” he told People.co.uk. “Buckle your dog up in the car and sign my petition available at www.NoahsBark.co.uk.”

GEM’s Williams urged all dog owners to be aware of the possible consequences: “Dog harnesses are readily available for dogs of all sizes and we advise motorists to always consider their dog as well as the rest of the family when it comes to car .

“This new law, if implemented, would be a great step towards reducing the number of accidents caused by animals and any law that helps make the roads a safer place is definitely a good thing.”
