Honda reveal safety developments with new Civic

Honda Civic 2012Honda is aiming for nothing short of top marks when it comes to the new Civic’s safety rating.

The ninth generation Civic – set for release this January – has been subjected to all forms of abuse at ’s high tech crash test facility in Tochigi, Japan recently.

Mitsuru Kariya, Development Leader, says that pedestrians and other road users have been as big a priority as the car’s occupants during the vehicle’s development.

“In Tochigi, we were able to crash the new Civic into vehicles of different weights and sizes and at different angles and speeds,” revealed Kariya.

“We wanted to make sure that we are offering the best ‘real world’ safety for our customers.”

The new Civic will mark the European debut of Honda’s Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) which keeps track of how far the vehicle is from the car in front and aims to reduce impact when a collision is inevitable.

“Just as important as technology that protects you in a crash is technology that helps you avoid an accident in the first place,” explained Kariya.

Windscreen wiper pivots have been designed to break away on impact while energy absorbing front wing mounts also aim to improve protection for pedestrians in the event of a collision.

Prices for the new Civic start at £16,495 for the entry-level 1.4-litre 100PS i-VTEC SE, topping out at £26,595 for the 2.2 i-DTEC EX GT.
