MOT reminder for 58-plate drivers

Owners of 58-reg cars are being reminded to ensure their vehicle is -ed.

With more than half (55%) of the 450,000 58-plates registered in September and October 2008, concerns have been raised that many motorists will put off their vehicle’s first MOT, making them instantly illegal.

These worries aren’t helped by the fact that 36% of car owners basically forget to book in their MOT.

David White, Customer Services Director at garage chain Kwik Fit, said: “This time of year sees a big spike in cars needing their first MOT test as a result of September sales peaks feeding through three years later.

“Our research has shown that up to half of all drivers forget when their MOT is due, especially if it’s the first time for that car.

“This analysis shows that those driving particular makes with 58 registrations should check their MOT due date, as they may find that this has been and gone and they are inadvertently driving around illegally.”

Mr White added that a fifth of the 58-reg plates that will need MOT-ing before November are Fords, Vauxhalls or Volkswagens.

MOT makeover

As of 17 October, MOT certificates started looking a bit different.

Instead the green and white form we’re all familiar with, certificates are now printed on a single side of plain A4 paper in black ink.

Alastair Peoples, Chief Executive of the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), says the cost-cutting decision is purely cosmetic: “Making this change to the MOT certificate will help reduce costs for VOSA and for garages at the same time as providing information in a more useful format.

“Motorists will benefit by having all the details about their car included on one sheet of paper making it easier to keep track of your paperwork and allowing people buying used cars to see all the relevant information about the vehicle.”
