Michelin highlights the cost of tyre neglect

Under-inflated are hitting UK motorists for an estimated £337m a year.

claim that by failing to maintain tyre pressure, drivers are wasting hundreds of millions on fuel every year.

The renowned tyre brand has been touring the country since May with its Fill Up With Air roadshow and has discovered that nearly four in ten motorists (39%) are driving on dangerous tyres under-inflated by at least 8 psi.

One in every twenty cars (5%) are also going about with punctured tyres.

Michelin say this neglect is wasting 244m litres of fuel and emitting more than 600,000 tonnes of CO2.

Phil Baldock, Head of Communications at Michelin, stressed the importance of driving with the correct tyre pressure.

“Under-inflated tyres can not only put lives at risk but they increase the stress on a vehicle’s steering and suspension, cause it to use more fuel and thus produce more CO2,” he said.

“Not only does the right pressure improve safety, it is beneficial for their bank balance to have correctly inflated tyres and it also helps the environment.

“There are lots of ways that people can cut their carbon footprint and keeping tyres at the correct pressure is a simple and cost effective solution.”

Michelin's Fill Up With Air campaign helped nearly 5,000 motorists save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions this summer.
