Date announced for fair fuel parliamentary debate

The prospect of scrapping scheduled rises to duty and the increasing demand for fairer prices will be debated in the House of Commons next week.

MPs will examine claims of how inflating pump prices are choking British businesses and comprising any economic recovery next Tuesday [15 November].

A parliamentary debate was guaranteed after the e-petition collected the 100,000 signatures required last month.

There was much rejoice from the FairFuel camp with a statement reading: “Of course this is just the next stage in the campaign for lower fuel duty and prices; there is still a long battle ahead but this is fantastic news.

“We wish to thank the 100,000 FairFuelUK e-petitioners, our 200,000 FairFuelUK website followers and the 11,000 supporters who rallied to email their local MPs over the last weekend. Without this pressure, we may have not got the debate.”

Specifically, the campaign calls for the to create a price stabilisation mechanism that smoothes out fluctuations in pump prices, pressure big oil companies to pass on cheaper oil to motorists and set up a Commission to look at market competitiveness and radical ways of cutting fuel taxes in the longer term.

ABD Chairman Brian Gregory said lowering fuel tax was a ‘no brainer’.

He added: “British drivers are paying the highest rates of tax on both petrol and diesel in the EU. The fuel tax escalator must be scrapped and replaced with a mechanism to stabilise fuel prices.

“We need a fair fuel tax for all and we need it now.”

FairFuelUK is now urging supporters to email their local MP appealing for them to attend the debate. Visit fairfueluk.com to put pressure on your local representative.
