2011’s last batch of NCAP ratings released
Eight new models have picked up top marks for safety.
In its final set of results for the year, Euro NCAP awarded five star ratings to Volkswagen’s new Beetle and up!, Mercedes-Benz’s B-Class and C-Class Coupe, the Chevrolet Malibu, Kia Rio, Subaru XV, and Range Rover Evoque.
Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP Secretary General, had an extra dollop of praise for Mercedes: “We are particularly pleased to see Collision Prevention Assist being fitted as standard equipment to the new Mercedes B-Class, the first time for a car in this segment to have such equipment so broadly fitted.
“It demonstrates the carmaker’s confidence in the ability of brake support technology, an opinion supported by Euro NCAP.”
Securing five stars for the up! [pictured left] will give VW the upper hand on its four star rivals when the city car hits the market next spring and along with the Beetle takes the manufacturer’s five star tally to double figure by joining the Golf, Golf Cabriolet, Jetta, Passat, Polo, Scirocco, Sharan and Tiguan.
A statement from Volkswagen read: “The up! and Beetle attained impressive results in the area of safety equipment.
“Here, Euro NCAP rated the seatbelt reminders for all seats and use of a vehicle dynamic control system (ESP) as especially positive. Euro NCAP is increasingly evaluating active safety assist systems in vehicles.
“Along with its five star rating, this also led to the up! receiving the Advanced Award for its City Emergency Braking function.”
Renault’s first foray into EV – the Fluence Z.E [pictured right] – was let down in regards to its pedestrian protection, driver and passenger protection, awarded four stars as a result.
Joining it in the four star category was the Fiat Panda, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jaguar XF and Chinese newcomers Geely Emgrand EC7 and MG6.
Mr van Ratingen was impressed by Geely’s progress and was optimistic it would continue: “These results mark a milestone for the Chinese automotive industry.
“It is a clear sign that Chinese car makers are building on recent experiences and rapidly investing in better vehicle safety. Even with the upcoming increased demands, five stars are expected to be within reach soon.”
