White paper highlights cost saving opportunities for van operators
There is plenty that van fleet operators can do to improve efficiency and limit costs, so says a new report commissioned by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VW CV).
With vans making up a tenth of all vehicles on British roads, Alastair Hemmings, VW CV’s National Fleet Manager, said the report highlights how a more effective use of telematics can reap benefits.
“Our white paper ‘Evolution of Van: Efficiency and Fleet Operation’ was commissioned to look in detail at the current pressures on van fleet operators and help understand more about improving efficiency, such as how to utilise fleets more effectively, and how to implement simple measures to cut operating and whole life costs,” he explained.
“This means better fuel use, better maintenance, better van choice and better utilisation, while a good, franchised van dealer is increasingly important.”
Mr Hemmings adds that telematics are a convenient way to obtain clearer data on fuel use and driver behaviour whilst presenting a better picture on route planning, vehicle use, performance and maintenance.
With highly-efficient common rail diesel engines, Alastair believes that VW’s Caddy, Transporter and Crafter vans offer decent savings on running costs with BlueMotion variants pushing mpg even further.
The complete white paper, written by commercial vehicle consultant Robin Dickeson, can be found at volkswagen-vans.co.uk/fleet/white-paper.
