Rental market to benefit from new LEZ rules

Around 75,000 HGVs, buses and coaches and 72,000 light commercial vehicles could be hit by the new LEZ rulesRevisions to London’s Low Emissions Zone () could see further growth for the increasingly flourishing commercial vehicle market in the New Year.

2011 has seen sales of CVs improve month-on-month, according to figures from the SMMT, and John Lewis, Chief Executive of the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), reckons more businesses with older vehicles will turn to the CV rental industry to avoid the LEZ’s tougher penalties for exceeding carbon emissions.

“People that travel into London on a regular basis will already have plans to replace older vehicles or fit them with particulate filters,” said Mr Lewis. However, those who enter the capital on a less frequent basis may find rental a more cost effective approach.

Economic sense

Data from suggest that around 75,000 HGVs, buses and coaches and 72,000 light commercial vehicles could be hit by the LEZ’s daily charge of £200, which comes into play from 3 January 2012.

“It might not make economic sense for them to buy a new vehicle or spend thousands of pounds on fitting a filter because of one or two trips to London, but they could hire a modern, -compliant van or truck for a fraction of the cost of paying the LEZ fee,” added the BVRLA head.
