M1 Wakefield lighting improvements

Upgrade work to provide improved, more reliable lighting for for drivers using the west of Wakefield will start next week.

The £850,000 project to upgrade the lighting system along the three mile stretch of the motorway between Junction 40 and Junction 41 will start on Tuesday (10 January) and is due to be completed by the end of February.

Much of the work will focus around the junctions themselves and drivers are being advised that this will require some off-peak closures of slip roads at both junctions between 9.30am and 3pm – with the southbound entry slip and northbound exit slip roads likely to be closed between these times between Tuesday of next week and Wednesday 19 January.

The southbound exit slip road at Junction 40 will also be subject to closures between 9.30am and 3pm for up to 21 days from Thursday 2 February.

Clearly signed diversions, using the M1, will be in place when any slip road closures are effected. However, the Highways Agency is also advising drivers that contractors will work to minimise the need for full slip road closures and as much work as possible will be done on the slip roads using lane or hard shoulder closures only.

Some short lengths of the hard shoulder and or lane one on the main carriageway in both directions will also be closed for works overnight but these will not affect drivers’ journeys.

Highways Agency project manager Sujad Hussain said, "This is essential work to improve the reliability of the lighting at these busy junctions. As well as helping the junctions to operate more safely and efficiently, this work will also help reduce maintenance visits – further reducing future inconvenience to motorway users.

“We are working closely with the contractors to minimise any inconvenience to drivers by restricting work to off-peak times and ensuring closures are restricted to a single lane and the hard shoulder as often as possible. Drivers should heed the information will be providing at the junctions and allow a little more time for their journeys when the diversions are in operation.”
