Safety work starts on A14 bridge near Stowmarket
Work to maintain the safety of a bridge on the A14 near Stowmarket in Suffolk is due to start later this month.
The improvements which are due to start on Monday 23 January will include replacing two parapets and repairing the concrete structure at Hill House Viaduct between Junction 49 and 50.
The £700,000 project, to be completed by the end of March 2012, also involves building a new inspection platform under the bridge and installation of a new system to help monitor the bearings in the structure.
Highways Agency project manager, Brian Pitkin, said: "This scheme will ensure the safety and long term future of Hill House Viaduct.
"The work will affect the A14 near Stowmarket and will mostly take place during the daytime, although some of it will require carriageway road closures, and so that will be done overnight, between 8pm and 6am, when traffic flows are lowest, to minimise disruption."
"During the work, a 24 hour 50mph speed limit will be in place in both directions, enforced by average speed cameras and there will be narrow lanes in both directions. I would like to remind drivers to observe the speed limit though the work for their own safety and to adhere to the speed limit on the diversion route."
The exact dates of the overnight road closures will be publicised in advance. A clearly signed diversion will be in place during these night closures diverting traffic via the A1120 and A1308.
