Manchester worst for rush hour congestion
Manchester-based workers suffer the slowest and most congested daily commute, according to new research.
The average journey time for Manchester commuters lasted five minutes short of two hours and covered 25.4 miles overall.
Car insurer Direct Line’s research widened its focus to include ten major UK cities and determined an average driving speed of 15mph during rush hour.
The average motoring commuter travels 29.2 miles every day to get to their workplace, although 5% drive 100 miles or more on a daily basis.
Nearly a third of car-based respondents (29%) said they had little choice but to drive with no other feasible way of getting to the office available. Similarly, 28% deemed public transport to be too inefficient while 18% considered it too expensive.
Commenting on the findings, Steve Price, Head of Direct Line car insurance, said: “The working day is far from nine to five for commuters who drive to the office, particularly when congestion can add almost two hours to daily travelling times.
“When drivers frequently experience long queues and are worried about being late getting to work, it is easy to get frustrated by the situation.
“Checking your route before leaving home, pre-warning your boss when you know traffic is bad or having a flexible working agreement in place can all help to reduce the stresses and strains of driving to work.”
