Electric taxis roll into London fleet
The dream of a fully electric taxi fleet has taken its first steps towards being a reality for eco-minded London taxi firm Climatecars.
Keys for Britain’s first two Renault Fluence Z.E. models were handed over to Climatecars MD Nicko Williamson at the Houses of Parliament this week in an exclusive partnership with the French manufacturer.
Based in Central London, so to take advantage of the capital’s growing recharge infrastructure, Mr Williamson believes the electric vehicles will play a vital part as London aims to reduce its CO2 output by 60% before 2025.
“The addition of the fully electric Renault Fluence to Climatecars fleet marks a crucial step towards our aim of being the world’s first zero emission car service,” said Nicko.
“We are really excited to have partnered with Renault and are looking forward to offering a 100% electric car service to our customers.”
The Climatecars’ boss added that customers will be able to hire the electric taxis at the same price as their normal hybrid fleet.
Great alternative
It was a sign of real progress for Climate Change Minister Greg Barker, who said: “It’s great Climatecars is doing its bit to make London a greener place by offering a great alternative to the humble black cab.
“Cutting carbon emissions is vital to limit global temperature rises to tackle climate change.”
The electric version of the Renault Fluence isn’t due to release to the public until Autumn but the spacious saloon’s 115 mile range and level of luxury is sure up the case for EVs.
“Fluence Z.E. will be the perfect way to be transported around the urban and suburban sprawl of the nation’s capital in refined and reliable zero-emission style,” said Thierry Sybord, Renault UK MD. “I hope both Climatecars and their clients enjoy their electric experience.
“Renault is the only company to be offering a full range of electric vehicles. We’re charging ahead with the launch of the first Z.E. models and have great ambitions for them.”
