The average Ford Mondeo racks up more mileage than any other car on the road, if data from Warranty Direct is to be believed.
After analysing around 50,000 live policies, the car warranty specialists found that the typical Mondeo covers over 15,000 miles every year, over 500 more than the next most-used car, the Volvo S80.
The Volkswagen Passat and Audi A6 were the next two most travelled models, clocking up more than 14,000 miles.
The rest of the top ten comprised BMW’s 5 Series, Ford S-MAX, Chrysler 300C, Volvo XC70, Audi A6, and the Nissan Pathfinder with each model covering between 500 or 3,000 miles more than the 12,000 mile average.
Duncan McClure Fisher, MD of Warranty Direct, said: “The Mondeo’s always been a favourite with company car drivers, and it appears they rarely stay idle for long. Despite this, they are reliable too.”
At the opposite end of the scale, the Nissan Micra was deemed Britain’s least-used car with a typical mileage of 5,580.
Nine of the ten least-used models were superminis with the MG TF being the only exception.
While superminis tend to not venture too far, Duncan added that the average 10 year old Mondeo will have travelled equivalent to nearly six times around the globe.
He continued: “It goes to show that when buying used, the rule-of-thumb average mileage of 12,000 isn’t really applicable, for example a four-year old Micra’s average mileage will be little over 20k miles whereas a Mondeo’s will be more like 60k miles.”
