Work to improve the drainage along the A27 near Polegate, East Sussex, will start next week.
The improvements are being carried out between Folkington Road and Folkington Manor.
The work will start on Monday 25 June and, weather permitting, will take 10 weeks to complete. It will involve overnight lane closures and temporary speed limits with a closure of the footpath next to the road throughout the work.
Martin Wright, Highways Agency Asset Manager said: "This work is designed to increase the efficiency of the drains in this location in dealing with water running off the A27, and it will improve safety by reducing incidents of flooding. There is a problem in this area caused by seasonal shrinking and swelling of the natural clay soil under the road. We will install new filter drains to reduce this effect by reducing the water entering the soil. About a dozen trees next to the road are also adding to the problem and we will remove these when the drains are installed. The work has been carefully planned to minimise disruption to road users and so will be carried out overnight, between 8pm and 6am, when traffic flows are lowest."
Work will be carried out with one lane closed to provide a safe distance for road users from the open excavations required to carry out the work.
There will be temporary traffic lights to allow vehicles to pass the work site and a temporary speed limit of 40mph will be in place overnight while the work is carried out. On some nights road users will be escorted past the works in a convoy at 10mph.
The footway next to the road will be closed 24 hours a day for the safety of pedestrians; an alternative route will be available for the duration of the scheme.
