Engineers will be carrying out maintenance work to a bridge over the M6 near Penrith for four nights from Monday 25 June.
The Highways Agency work will take place underneath the structure, which is approximately one and a half miles south of Junction 40, between 8pm and 6am each night.
The bridge is used by vehicles travelling between the A6 near Clifton and the Buckholme Wood area of Cumbria, and engineers will be checking the condition of the concrete pillars.
The motorway will be reduced to a single lane in each direction for one mile south, and half a mile north, of the bridge while the work is carried out. The restrictions are due to be lifted by 6am on Friday 29 June.
Mark Mosley, the Highways Agency's project manager for the scheme, said: "We've deliberately arranged for this work to take place overnight so that the impact on motorists can be kept to a minimum. Our engineers regularly carry out inspections of motorway bridges and a recent check of the bridge near Penrith identified this work as being needed. Motorists will continue to be able to travel both over and under the bridge while the work takes place."
