Drivers urged to avoid the A1 at Dunston in Tyne and Wear due to flooding

Drivers are this evening being urged by the Highways Agency to avoid the southbound A1 around Dunston, Tyne and Wear, after exceptionally heavy rainfall this afternoon led to flooding and the closure of both carriageways.

The northbnound carriageway was cleared of rain water and re-opened earlier this evening but Highways Agency contractors are still investigating the continuing situation on the southbound carriageway which remains closed and has led to long queues and delays while traffic is diverted away from the area.

The southbound A1 is currently closed between its junctions with the A694 and the A184.

Drivers are also advised that conditions along the A69 between Carlisle and Newcastle remain difficult in places following flooding earlier today around its junction with the A689. The Highways Agency has been informed that police are managing traffic through the flood-affected area by using stop/go boards.

The Highways Agency is advising drivers to check traffic conditions before they travel. The Highways Agency provides live traffic information via its website www.highways.gov.uk/traffic, local and national radio travel bulletins, electronic road signs and mobile platforms, such as the iPhone. Local Twitter services are also available at @HAtraffic_neastand @HAtraffic_pen9 for Transpennine routes.

Providing they can do so safely, road users can also call the Highways Agency Information Line (0300 123 5000) to keep up to date with road conditions.
