M4 closure – junctions 2-3

10 July 2012

Road users are advised that the M4 remains closed in both directions between junctions 2 and 3 as work to repair the Boston Manor Viaduct, just west of junction 2, continues.

Drivers planning to travel into west London via the M4 are advised to seek alternative routes via the M3 or M40.

The Highways Agency took the decision overnight on Friday to close the motorway between junctions 1 and 3 for up to five days. This was because in entering the final stages of complex repair work we found a further crack in a highly stressed zone over the bridge supports. This requires a unique repair solution, which we are progressing, which requires us to keep the viaduct closed until the repair is complete.

Overnight (Sunday/Monday), having reviewed the traffic situation, we were able to introduce measures to reopen the road between junctions 1 and 2, with a lane two closure westbound.

This change was intended to relieve pressure on the junction 1 (Chiswick) roundabout which is on the diversion route and early indications show this to be working. However we are continually monitoring the situation and if this measure does not lead to the intended improvements we will again review it.

The repairs are progressing to schedule and we expect the full programme of repairs will be completed to enable the viaduct to be reopened in time for the London 2012 Olympic Games later this month.
