A616 resurfacing work at Wortley

13 July 2012

The Highways Agency will begin work next week to resurface the A616 at Wortley near Barnsley.

The work, which will provide an improved road surface for drivers, will start on Monday 16 July and be completed on Friday 20 July.

In order to minimise any disruption to drivers the work will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am. During the work it will be necessary to close the slip road between the A616 and A629. The southbound A629 at the top of the slip road will be closed and there will also be a Lane 1 closure on the eastbound A616.

During the closure clearly signed diversion routes will be in place. All A616 eastbound traffic wishing to exit at Wortley will continue along the A616, turn at Westwood roundabout and travel back along the A616 westbound, exiting at the Wortley junction. All A629 traffic wishing to join the A616 eastbound will continue along the A629 southbound, turning left onto the A61 at Crown Inn junction and join the A616 at Westwood roundabout.

Highways Agency project manager, Tim Calvert, said: "This work will improve the road surface and reduce the need for further roadworks in the area. We have planned these works carefully to minimise the disruption to drivers and local residents. During the works we advise road users to plan their journeys to avoid delays. Safety is our top priority and for the safety of road users and roadworkers we encourage all drivers to drive carefully past the works and along the diversion routes, keeping within the speed limit, and concentrating on the road ahead."
