Drainage improvement for A66 at Thornthwaite

16 July 2012

A 22,000 ounds Highways Agency project to improve drainage and cyclist safety along the A66 at Thornthwaite near Bassenthwaite Lake in Cumbria will get underway next week.

A 100 yard section of kerb drain alongside the eastbound A66 not far from the aqueduct carrying Church Beck over the road, will be renewed in the scheme. A gap between the kerb and the carriageway which has been a hazard to cyclists will also be removed.

The week-long project is due to start on Monday (23 July) with work taking place between 8am and 7pm each day with the eastbound lane shut for about 250 yards. Temporary traffic lights will be installed to manage traffic past the roadworks and these will be in place around the clock until the scheme is completed on or before Friday 27 July.

Highways Agency project sponsor Peter Gee said, "This part of the A66 has been prone to flooding on occasions and the drainage improvement will tackle that and generally enhance safety for drivers and other road users. People using this section of the A66 during the day will find themselves being held at the temporary traffic lights for a short time so should allow a little extra time to complete journeys."
