Details of a junction improvement scheme in North Tyneside to improve access to the A1058 Coast Road from the A19 and ease congestion were published today (19 July 2012) by the Highways Agency.
The option confirmed as the preferred route (Option 4e - the Blue option), following public consultation in 2009/10, is to deliver a free-flowing A19 under the busy junction. This involves constructing two bridges which will carry the A1058 above a newly lowered section of the A19 and a new bridge to take the A1058 across the junction. Access to the junction to and from the lowered A19 carriageway will be via new slip roads.
These improvements will increase capacity and reduce the congestion at the junction, which will have a positive impact on journey times for local businesses and help support regeneration and economic growth in the area. It will also improve safety for both road users and local residents.
Jeremy Bloom, Senior Development Manager for the Highways Agency, said: "We were pleased with the level of interest and feedback from local people during the consultation period and are glad to be able to confirm the preferred route today. The preferred route announced offers the best value for money and will result in a shorter construction period and less environmental impact than other options considered."
For a copy of the preferred route announcement leaflet, which includes details of what happens next on the project, and for more information, members of the public can contact the project team by emailing darlene.procter@highways.gsi.gov.uk, visiting the scheme home page at http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/projects/19802.aspx or by calling the Highways Agency Information Line on 0300 123 5000.
Subject to the successful completion of statutory processes and funding, construction work on the A19/A1058 scheme could start in 2016.
