Weekend closure on A46 Newark to Widmerpool for repair work

19 July 2012

The Highways Agency is advising road users that the southbound carriageway of the A46 at the A6097 Margidunum junction near Bingham, will be closed from 8pm on Friday, 27 July to 6am on Monday 30 July.

The closure will be in place to repair a 70 metre long uneven section of the A46 which has occurred due to the expansion of gypsum rock under the road's surface.

During the work traffic will be directed along a short diversion route off the A46 exit slip road at Car Colston and along the old A46 through Margidunum before rejoining the southbound carriageway at Saxondale. As the diversion route runs parallel to the A46, road users should not have to travel any increased distance.

Highways Agency project manager Steve Wrenn said: "The problem has occurred due to a chemical reaction between the naturally-occurring gypsum, moisture and cement used in the road building. This reaction causes the ground to expand resulting in an uneven road surface. To correct this and prevent any further problems we need to excavate a short section of the carriageway, remove the material that has gypsum mixed in with it and then resurface the road to restore it to its proper standard. The repair work needs to take place now, before the uneven surface creates a hazard for road users. In order to minimise disruption the closure will be in place when traffic flows are lightest. The diversion route is a short one so we do not expect too many delays but we would advise road users to take extra care as they drive through the works as the road layout will be different to what they have been used to."

The resurfacing element of the repair work can only be carried out when the road surface is dry. If the weather is particularly bad when the works are planned to start then they will be deferred to the following weekend.

Up-to-date traffic information for the whole of the Highways Agency's road network is available online at www.highways.gov.uk/traffic or on 0300 123 5000.
