Drivers using the M6 and M61 in Greater Manchester and Lancashire are being advised of overnight lane and slip road closures as work on a 330,000 pounds routine maintenance programme gets underway.
Sections of the M6 in both directions between Junction 26 at Orrell and Junction 30 at Blacow, as well as the M61 around Junction 9 at Clayton Brook, will benefit from resurfacing and stud and road marking renewal in the programme which is due to start on Wednesday (25 July).
All the Highways Agency work, which will include other small maintenance and repair works such as gulley clearance, will be taking place overnight. The project is due to be completed by Friday 26 October.
The M6 itself will remain open at all times during the work, sometimes with the hard shoulder operating as a running lane, but slip roads will be subject to closure with clearly-signed diversions in place allowing traffic to enter or leave motorway via the opposite carriageway.
As well as slip road closures on the M6 the section of the northbound M61 from its interchange with the M65 to where the traffic joins the M6 will close overnight for one night after the school holidays to install new road studs and renew road markings. Again, clearly-signed diversions, using the M6 and M65, will be in place. This work is to carry out repairs following a chemical spillage along the carriageway last November.
Overnight working will be taking place between 10pm and 5am each night or 7am at weekend when traffic flows are lowest.
Highways Agency project sponsor Jakub Malaj said, "This is important if routine maintenance work along these busy sections of the M6 and M61 and slips roads as well as the main carriageways will benefit from the work. "We have worked hard to ensure the M6 can remain open at all times sometimes with a 50mph speed limit in place although a section of the northbound carriageway of the M61 will need to close for a night with a good alternative motorway route in place. Drivers needing to join or leave the motorway when slip roads are closed will find clearly-signed diversions in place using the motorway network and we will be signing timings and locations of these overnight closures in advance."
