Highways Agency to resurface A49 between Moreton-on-Lugg and Wellington

27 July 2012

The Highways Agency will be starting resurfacing works on a 1.5mile stretch of the A49 in both directions between Moreton-on-Lugg and Wellington next week. The existing footpath along the carriageway will also be resurfaced and widened where possible.

The work is planned to start on Wednesday 1 August and is likely to take approximately eight weeks to complete. To minimise disruption for road users, all work will be undertaken overnight between 8pm and 6am, when traffic flows are lowest.

During the works the A49 will be closed overnight in both directions between Hereford and the junction with the A417 at Hope under Dinmore.
Diversion routes will be clearly signposted:

* Southbound traffic will be redirect eastwards using the A417 towards the signalised junction at Newtown. Traffic will then be directed onto the A4103 towards the roundabout junction with the A49 at Hereford; and

* Northbound will traffic will be redirected on to the A4103 from the roundabout junction with the A49 and sent across Hereford onto the A417 at Newtown. After being directed left at the signalised junction, all traffic will re-join the A49.

Laura Mobley, Highways Agency project manager, said:  "This work is necessary to prolong the life of this important road and improve safety for drivers. Every effort has been made to ensure any disruption to drivers and residents is kept to a minimum, so we are carrying out this work overnight when traffic levels are lower.  During the works we advise road users to plan their journeys to avoid delays. Safety is our top priority and for the safety of road users and roadworkers we encourage all drivers to drive carefully past the works and along the diversion routes, keeping within the speed limit, and concentrating on the road ahead."

More information about these works is available from the Highways Agency Information Line on telephone number 0300 123 5000 or email ha_info@highways.gsi.gov.uk.
