Coaches carrying Olympic athletes, officials and media will be able to use the M4 in west London in both directions from the early hours of Saturday, improving travel times to and from Heathrow Airport.
Until now these vehicles have only been able to use the M4 eastbound; but from 2am on Saturday 4 August, they will be exempt from the weight restriction for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes on the M4 between junctions 1 and 3 in both directions.
After careful assessment, the Highways Agency has agreed that Olympic coaches can be accommodated safely within the weight restriction. The Highways Agency has worked closely with the Games organisers to ensure that their drivers understand the new arrangements.
The changes only apply to authorised Olympic coaches weighing up to 18 tonnes carrying athletes, officials and media. For all other vehicles, the 7.5 tonne weight restriction between junctions 1 and 3 in both directions remains in both directions, with a clearly signed diversion via the adjacent dual carriageways: A312 and the A4.
