A1(M) Bowes Incline to Eighton Lodge resurfacing 21 August 2012

21 August 2012

The Highways Agency will be carrying out resurfacing work on a 2.5 mile section of the A1(M) between Junction 65 (Birtley Interchange) and Eighton Lodge Interchange in Gateshead next week.

The work will take place from Tuesday 28 August to Saturday 15 September and includes resurfacing the north and southbound carriageways, replacing road markings and applying a high friction surface.

During the work it will be necessary to put in place lane and carriageway closures on the A1(M) between Junction 65 (Birtley Interchange) and Eighton Lodge Interchange. During the closures clearly signed diversion routes will be in place. For safety reasons a 50mph speed limit will be in place along the length of the roadworks.

There will be night time lane closures on the north and southbound carriageways on 28, 29 and 30 August. From 31 August to 5 September the northbound carriageway will be closed overnight with a contra-flow on the southbound carriageway. On 6 and 7 September there will be night time lane closures on the north and southbound carriageways. From 8 to 11 September the southbound carriageway will be closed overnight with a contra-flow on the northbound carriageway. From 12 to 14 September there will night time lane closures on the north and southbound carriageways.

Work will take place between 8pm and 6am on Sunday to Thursday nights, between 8pm and 8am on Friday nights, and between 8pm and 9am on Saturday nights.

Highways Agency project manager, Steve Bishop, said: "This work will improve the road surface and reduce the need for further roadworks in the area. We have planned these works carefully to minimise the disruption to drivers and local residents. During the works we advise road users to plan their journeys to avoid delays. Safety is our top priority and for the safety of road users and roadworkers we encourage all drivers to drive carefully along the diversion routes, keeping within the speed limit, and concentrating on the road ahead."
