Roadworks information for Highways Agency roads in the North West 24 August 2012

The Highways Agency will help keep traffic moving over the August bank holiday weekend by ensuring that 99 per cent of England's motorways and other strategic roads are free of roadworks.

NEW SCHEME

M602, Junctions 2 to 1 Eccles

Two lanes of the motorway will be closed overnight for three nights from Tuesday 28 August for bridge upgrades. The work will affect the westbound side of the motorway and will take place between 10pm and 5am. There will be some occasions when this section of the motorway needs to be closed entirely, when a diversion will be put in place.

M66, Junction 4 Bury

A scheme to improve the link road from the M66 onto the M62 is due to start on Friday 31 August. The southbound exit slip road at Junction 4 of the M66 will be extended to ease congestion and improve safety for vehicles travelling onto the eastbound side of the M62. The work will be carried out overnight and diversions will be in place when the slip road is closed. It is due to be completed by the end of September.

M62, Junction 12 Eccles

The eastbound exit slip road from the M62 onto the M602 at Junction 12 will need to be closed overnight for two nights from Friday 31 August while improvement work is carried out to a bridge. The work will take place between 10pm and 5am and a diversion will be in place.

M6, Junction 21a Birchwood

Overnight work to resurface the exit slip roads at Junction 21a of the M6, which lead to the westbound side of the M62, is due to start on Saturday 1 September. The work will be carried out between 10pm and 5am and diversions will be in place when the slip roads are closed. The project is due to be completed by the end of November.

M65, Junctions 4 to 3 Blackburn

The westbound side of the M65 will be closed overnight between Junctions 4 and 3 from Saturday 1 September while resurfacing work and bridge upgrades take place. The work will be carried out between 10pm and 5am and is due to last for approximately three weeks. A diversion will be in place.

A56, Bury to Accrington

Work to upgrade a nine-mile section of the A56, which links the M66 near Bury to the M65 at Accrington, is due to begin on Wednesday 29 August. The six-week project includes resurfacing, upgrading road markings, replacing reflective road studs and improving lighting. Work will be carried out overnight between 10pm and 5am during weekdays and between 10pm and 7am at weekends. Diversions will be put in place when sections of the road need to be closed.

A66, Brougham Bridges

There will be 24 hour lane closures in place from Saturday 1 September for bridge maintenance work. The work is due to be completed by the end of October.

ONGOING SCHEMES

M61, Junctions 4 to 5 Bolton

Work is taking place to install a new concrete barrier in the central reservation of the M61 between Junctions 4 and 5. A 50 mph speed limit is in place through the roadworks, and there will be some lane closures overnight and at weekends.

M60/A34 South Manchester / Cheadle

A major project is underway between Junctions 4 and 2 of the M60 and along the A34 to reduce congestion and improve safety.

Various traffic restrictions are currently in place including daytime hard shoulder closures along the M60 anti-clockwise for 2 miles, and a 50mph speed limit through narrowed lanes, and overnight closures of slip roads, Sharston link road and M60 anti-clockwise carriageway from 9pm to 5am weekdays and 9pm to 7am at weekends.

Overnight closures will affect:

M56 eastbound Sharston Link between Junctions 3 and 1
M60 anticlockwise between Junctions 5 and 3
The entry slip road from the northbound A34 onto the anti-clockwise M60 at Junction 3
M60 Junction Junction 3 anti-clockwise exit slip road onto the southbound A34
M60 Junction 3 clockwise exit slip which merges with the anti-clockwise exit slip before meeting the southbound A34.

Work is expected to be completed by Friday 5 October.

WORK BEING CARRIED OUT BY OTHER AGENCIES ON THE HIGHWAYS AGENCY NETWORK

A663 Chadderton

There is a 30mph speed limit for all traffic on the A663 between Whitegate

Lane and Milton Drive until the end of August, while junction construction and improvement work is carried out.

M6 Junction 31

Drivers are warned of possible delays in the Fulwood area of Preston around the M6 Junction 31a as two extra lanes are added to the motorway slip road, which takes traffic from the motorway onto Bluebell Way. Traffic signals will also be added to the roundabout. The work is being carried out by the council on behalf of the Homes and Communities Agency.
