Weekly Round Up of Road Works in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Bristol 03/09/2010

M5 J12 Gloucester – overnight work

Work to ease congestion on a busy junction on the M5 near Gloucester starts on 6th September.

The 14 week scheme is being carried out by the Highways Agency to reduce congestion at junction 12 of the M5. All works will take place overnight between 8pm and 6am.

The project will increase capacity by adding lanes to the busiest parts of the junction – including new dedicated lanes, north and southbound, between the M5 and Gloucester. This will improve the flows of motorway traffic.

Other work taking place includes the installation of traffic signals which will help to balance the flow between traffic exiting the motorway and other traffic using the roundabout.

Work will start on 6th September and continue each night for 14 weeks.

M5 J19 Portishead – overnight work

The Highways Agency will start overnight work on 6 September to resurface the roundabout and renew the traffic signals at M5 J19. The work will also include renewing barriers and white lining and replacing high friction surfaces on the approaches to signals.

The work is programmed to be carried out overnight between 8pm and 5am each night and is due to be completed by 3 December.

While the work is being carried out there will be lane closures and 50 mph speed restrictions on the slip roads and 20 mph on the roundabout. There will be some overnight slip road closures and diversions.

M5 J22-21 (Weston-super-Mare to Burnham) – northbound resurfacing

A four-mile section of the M5 northbound between junctions 22 and 21 is to be resurfaced to improve safety for road users.

At the same time, the safety barrier will be replaced, drains will be repaired, and the Sedgemoor Service Area exit slip road will be resurfaced.

The work will start on Monday, 6 September and is due to be completed by Friday, 8 October. It will take place overnight, between 7pm and 7am each night, when traffic flows are lower.

There will be lane closures and 50 mph speed restrictions while the work is carried out, and some overnight slip road closures and diversions will be necessary.

M5 J31 overnight closure

Maintenance on the M5 at Junction 31 is due to commence on 6th September and is expected to take 1 night.

To complete the work safely we need to close approximately 600m of the southbound carriageway at junction 31 from 20:00 to 02:00. During the closure traffic will be diverted as follows:

Exit the M5 at junction 31 and travel along the A30. At the roundabout joining the A377, turn around and travel back along the A30 to join the southbound A38.

We also need to close the junction 31 southbound exit slip road link to the A30 from 02:00 to 06:00. During the closure traffic will be diverted as follows:

Remain on the A38 and then exit at Kennford, to return northbound on the A38. Continue to junction 31 and exit to join the A30.

These closures will run consecutively on the night of the 6th September 2010.

M5 J27 overnight carriageway maintenance

Carriageway maintenance on the M5 at junction 27 is due to commence on 6th September and is expected to take 1 night.

To complete the work safely we need to close the junction 27 southbound entry slip road from 20:00 to 05:00. During the closure traffic will diverted as follows:

Road users wishing to join the southbound M5 at junction 27 will be advised to travel northbound to junction 26. They will then exit the motorway, turn around and travel south along the M5 to continue their journey.

A303 near Berwick St James Junction, Wiltshire

Essential carriageway maintenance between the Berwick St James junction with the A303 and Yarnbury Hill, is due to commence on 6th September and is expected to take five nights to complete.

Work will take place from 20:00 to 05:00, during which time traffic will be controlled by temporary traffic signals.

M5 between J13 and J14 (Gloucestershire)

Bridge protection works will be starting at two locations from 6 September for approximately 6 weeks. There will be three narrow lanes and hard shoulder running with a 50mph speed restriction to allow work in the central reservation.

M5 J25 (near Taunton) Bridge Work

There is work on three bridges over the M5 in Somerset.

Shoreditch Road Overbridge: started 5thJuly 2010

Single lane running with traffic signals for 12 weeks.

Some overnight closures required, when a diversion will be in place

Stoke Road Overbridge: started 23rd August

Full closure for approx. 6 weeks, a diversion route will be signed and in place.

Hyde Lane Overbridge:  starts 13th September

Full closure for approx. 6 weeks, a diversion route will be signed and in place.

The work will re-water proof, resurface, repair expansion joints, replace kerbs and repaint the white lines on all four bridges.

The majority of the work will affect the county roads only with hard shoulder closures and some overnight lane closures on the M5 at some stages of the work.

M48 Severn Bridge

The Highways Agency is carrying out inspections to ensure that measures to prevent further corrosion in the main suspension cables on the M48 Severn Bridge have been effective.

There are currently lane closures in each direction and a 50mph speed limit to allow contractors to carry out the cable inspections.  The work is due to finish in October this year.

Next phase of roundabout work begins at M1 Junction 34

The Highways Agency is advising drivers that the next phase of roundabout widening works will begin at Junction 34 of the M1 next week. Work will take place from Monday 6 September to divert a water main which runs across the roundabout.

This work is the second phase of a scheme to widen the roundabout. The scheme will increase the capacity on the roundabout and reduce congestion at the junction. The Agency has already completed work to upgrade the traffic lights at the roundabout and the main work to widen the roundabout will begin in 2011.

Work to divert the water main will last for 14 weeks. At times during the works it will be necessary to close sections of the inner lane of the roundabout in order to allow works traffic safe access to the centre of the roundabout. To minimise the disruption for drivers, closures will take place between 10am and 3pm hours, Monday to Friday only.

Highways Agency project manager Steve Wright said: “Once complete the widened roundabout will smooth traffic flow and reduce congestion at the junction. There will only be slight delays to traffic during the water main diversion as the majority of work will take place within the roundabout and any lane restrictions will take place at off peak periods. We ask drivers to take care when traveling through the road works.”

M18 safety improvement scheme begins

Work to improve safety by replacing the central reservation barrier on the M18 near Doncaster, South Yorkshire will begin on Monday 6 September.

The Highways Agency scheme involves replacing the steel central reservation barrier with a safer, concrete barrier and improving drainage on an 8.8 mile (14.35km) stretch of the motorway between Junction 2 and Waterton Bridge (north of Junction 4). Work will be completed by the end of March 2011.

In order to minimise disruption to road users, two lanes of traffic will be maintained during the day, with the motorway being reduced to one lane in each direction overnight whilst the works in the central reservation are carried out.  The work will be carried out in phases, with the first – between Warning Tongue Lane bridge (north of Junction 3) and Junction 4 – starting on 6 September and completing in November.

During the work, a 50mph speed limit will be in place to ensure the safety of road users and workers. The traffic management, including the reduced speed limit, will remain in place 24 hours a day.

The second phase of the scheme, between Junction 3 and Warning Tongue Lane bridge, will start in mid-October and last for 12 weeks. Work between Junction 4 and Waterton Bridge will start in mid-November and last for 11 weeks, with the final phase – between Junction 2 (Wadworth Interchange) and Junction 3 – starting in early January for eight weeks. More details about the exact dates will be confirmed nearer the time.

Highways Agency project manager, Andrew Jennings, said: “This barrier replacement scheme will increase safety on the M18 in South Yorkshire. The new barriers are stronger and more robust – reducing the risk of vehicles involved in accidents crossing from one side of the motorway to the other, and improving the safety of road users and road workers. The barriers also require less maintenance and repairs and hence will reduce the likelihood of future disruption to the road user. Drivers are advised to approach these roadworks with care and allow extra time for their journeys.”

Weekly summary of roadworks in Kent and Sussex 01/09/2010

A traffic management summary for both new and ongoing work

The information provided in this report is correct as of the above date but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

M20 Chatham Road Bridge Repairs
Work started on the repair of the Chatham Road Bridge on the coastbound M20 near Junction 6, Maidstone, Kent on Monday 09 August. The work is now proceeding in two phases.

Phase one began on Sunday 15 August, for around six weeks. During this phase the M20 junction 6 coastbound distributor road will be closed to traffic. Road users joining from the junction 5 (Aylesford) entry slip road wishing to access the main M20 carriageway will join the distributor road, then exit at the junction 6 exit slip road, go across Cobtree Roundabout and rejoin the M20 distributor road via the junction 6 entry slip road to continue with their journey.

A section of the northbound carriageway of the A229 Chatham Road remains closed each night from 8pm to 6am. During each overnight closure, road users on the northbound A229 Chatham Road will be diverted onto the A229 Chatham Road northbound distributor road via the Running Horse Roundabout. They will then rejoin the A229 Chatham Road main carriageway at the Cobtree Roundabout.  This section of the work is due to be completed by 24 September.

M20 Junctions 11 to 13 Drainage Survey
Drainage surveys continue this week on the M20 between junctions 11 and 13, with overnight (8pm until 6am) lane one closures on both carriageways continue until 06 September 2010.

The work will assess the condition of drains along the motorway and help the Highways Agency to determine whether any repair work or cleaning is required.

A27 Fontwell to Arundel Drainage Surveys There will be overnight (8pm – 6am) mobile lane closures on the A27 between Fontwell and Arundel in West Sussex from Wednesday 25 August for three weeks while drainage surveys are carried out.

A23 Parapet Repainting
There will be off-peak daytime (9.30am until 4.00pm) lane closures and temporary traffic lights on both the A23 South Downs Way bridge near Pyecombe and the Albourne Road bridge near Hurstpierpoint in West Sussex from Tuesday 31 August for three weeks.

The work will involve repainting the parapets on both bridges. There will be no traffic management on the A23.

M23 Smallfield Bund
There will be narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit on the M23 northbound carriageway past junction 9 from Tuesday 31 August for 8 weeks whilst work is carried out to repair the embankment on the motorway verge.

A21 Whydown Hill
There will be temporary traffic lights in operation for three nights this week on the A21 Whydown Hill, in East Sussex as potentially hazardous trees are removed.

Six trees will be felled and four others will be pruned.

The roots of the trees are affecting the stability of the embankment and creating a safety concern for A21 road users.

The work will be carried out overnight between 9pm and 6am, when traffic flows are lowest, on Wednesday 01 September, Thursday 02 September and Friday 03 September. There will be temporary traffic lights, with traffic being stopped on a red light in both directions while any materials are taken down from the trees.

A20 Resurfacing
Various sections of the A20 near Dover are being resurfaced to provide a smoother, quieter surface for road users and to minimise any unplanned maintenance closures in the future.

The resurfacing work will begin on Wednesday 01 September in Lord Warden Square, off the A20. From Monday 06 September the work will move to the A20 and will involve closures of the road, from 8pm to 6am. Clearly signed diversions will be in place during the closures. The work is due to be completed on Friday 17 September.
