Fleet Car and Van Insurance Guide
According to a report in The Guardian in January 2013, car insurance premiums are expected to rise again this year from three per cent to 10 per cent following a sharp increase in the costs that insurers face. While this has hit the pocket of the average motorist, it has had an even greater impact on those with fleet car insurance or fleet van insurance.
Fleet insurance premiums may be rising but there are now a host of car and van insurance providers that will tailor their policies specifically for fleets: helping companies save money on their insurance and enjoy additional features.
Why is fleet insurance so important?
Car and van insurance are legal necessities in the UK: your drivers will not be able to get behind the wheel without them. Fleet insurance is designed to simply make life that little bit easier: by insuring all of your vehicles under one policy.
How many vehicles can be insured with fleet insurance?
Policies vary between providers. Some offer fleet car and van insurance aimed at small businesses: meaning they will typically cover three-five cars with their fleet insurance policies. Others meanwhile, will offer fleet insurance exclusively for large businesses: meaning you may need to have a fleet of 15 cars or more in order to qualify for the cover.
What cover options are included with fleet insurance?
Typically, fleet insurance will offer the same benefits as a traditional car or van insurance policy. However, you may also benefit from some additional cover features designed for fleet owners, such as:
- Detached trailer cover: Cover for your trailer in case it becomes detached while you are towing it on the road.
- Hazardous goods insurance: Insurance for any hazardous goods you may be transporting which are affected by an accident.
- Medical expenses cover: Assistance with the cost of any medical expenses needed to help an injured employee following an accident.
- Replacement vehicles: Most fleet insurance providers will offer a replacement vehicle for the length of time that your company car is off the road.
- Cover for driving abroad: Insurance for your cars or vans driven overseas: just check the level of cover that is provided for European travel as a comprehensive policy may be downgraded to third party cover on European roads.
How can you save money on fleet insurance?
Fleet insurance premiums will generally be based on the level of risk your fleet is deemed to pose: i.e. how likely you are to make a claim. As such, reducing the risk of an accident or vehicle theft is likely to reduce the cost of fleet insurance. Some steps you could take include:
- Advance security: Consider investing in security devices for your fleet such as Thatcham approved alarms, immobilisers and tracking devices.
- Discounts: Look for fleet insurance discounts: such as no-claims discounts for avoiding accidents; and online discounts for purchasing a policy online.
- Named drivers: If your drivers have a particularly good driving record without convictions then you may benefit from naming them to an insurer.
- Parking: Try and leave your vehicles in a secure car park or in a locked garage overnight where they are less likely to be targeted by thieves.
- Pay annually: You will generally benefit from paying for fleet insurance “up front” and avoiding interest charges.
- Planned driving: Avoiding rush hour and other periods during which accidents are more likely to occur may lower your premiums.
- Vehicles: Choose the vehicles in your fleet carefully. Generally, older vehicles with smaller engines qualify for lower premiums because they are less likely to be targeted by thieves and less likely to be driven at high speeds.
